In these two lectures, I shall talk about the role of gender in the formation of English high modernism. What kinds of constructions of gender were introduced by Joseph Conrad and Virginia Woolf into their pioneering works? Why is the role of gender identity central to these two writers?

In this lecture I shall talk about how the Far East, particularly Japan, is figured in the Western imagination as seen in cinema. I shall pay particularly close attention to Memoirs of a Geisha (艺妓回忆录) in which prominent Chinese actresses (章子怡 / 渡边谦 / 杨紫琼 / 巩俐)were chosen to play Japanese characters.

My new novel is constructed as an alphabet book with entries done as in a dictionary or encyclopedia. I shall talk about why I decided to use this form, and I shall read relevant passages during my discussion of the book. Copies will be printed for the students.
